Malignancy

Disclaimer: This game was created in 72 hours for the Ludum Praxi game jam. It is not finished and not playable, in my opinion. That said, I do plan on fleshing the game out and making a complete product!

The world was as what we’re used to. Humans gathered, built culture and cities, humans waged wars on each other’s cities, people loved and hated, humans harnessed powerful arcane power and others hunted them down for one sin or another. One day, however, the sky lit up such that night was like day. Fire and brimstone rained down upon the planet, many holy men decrying their fellow citizens and kings for bringing their gods’ wrath down upon them. Cities fell and their people fled. It wasn’t long before those fleeing spoke of ‘demons’ possessing people. ‘Foul hellspawn’ who would climb down man and animals’ throats and force them to commit heinous acts. Even the trees grew more imposing. Those who were not cut down were dragged off to become one with the horde of crazed creatures.

Malignancy is a dark fantasy role playing game with elements of sci-fi horror. The default setting takes place in an early feudal-era country called The Old Lands, but you may set your game wherever you please. One thing is true about whichever setting you pick, however; The world has been ravaged by a parasitic organism from outer space. All living things (humans, animals, trees, minerals etc.) are all infected by the organism dubbed The Malignancy. Thankfully, each organism within each living being is at varying stages of consciousness and power. All beings will heal at a faster rate than normal, some even use the parasite’s ‘gift’ to perform supernatural (and often grotesque) feats. The more one taps into this power, however, the more awaken the Malignancy within them becomes. Give the creature too much control over your body and you risk having it fully take over. You will become one with the Hive. Whether you are from a tribe in the Old Lands or from one of the many magically-protected, underground ‘Sanctuaries’, you are forced to scour the land and survive. Whether you fight for your own selfish needs or those you hold dear, one thing is true; You have creature inside of you. It wants to take control of your body. It is alive and it is malignant.
